Wizz Air suspends flights affecting thousands of passengers, reopens base in Central Europe

Due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, which carries the risk of triggering a regional war potentially involving U.S. intervention, Wizz Air has decided to suspend its flights to two Middle Eastern destinations. The suspension will last for almost the entire summer season. Meanwhile, the Hungarian low-cost airline has announced the reopening of a base in Central Europe.

Wizz Air suspends flights to two Middle Eastern destinations

According to portfolio.hu, Wizz Air will suspend its flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) from 3rd July until at least 15th September. The decision is due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, which has led to the closure of airspace in multiple countries across the region.

The Hungarian budget airline informs passengers who booked their flights directly through its system via the phone numbers and email addresses provided. However, passengers who booked their tickets through online or offline travel agencies are advised to contact those agencies directly. Affected passengers may request a full refund or opt for rebooking.

The airline has requested passengers’ understanding and emphasised that the safety of its passengers, crew, and air operations remains its top priority.

As previously reported, Wizz Air will not operate flights to Tel Aviv (Israel) and Amman (Jordan) until 20th June. Furthermore, it is redirecting all flights to avoid the affected airspaces.

Reopening of Central European base announced

According to its official website, Wizz Air, Romania’s largest airline, has announced the reopening of its base in Suceava, eastern Romania, further expanding its operations in the country. The airline will allocate two aircraft, introduce eight new routes, and increase the frequency of one existing route.

These aircraft will enhance connectivity from the city, enabling the launch of eight new routes. Starting from 15th December 2025, passengers will be able to fly from Suceava to Bologna, Milan Bergamo, Venice, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Birmingham, Larnaca, and Brussels Charleroi, in addition to Vienna from 30th September. Wizz Air will also increase the frequency of flights to Dortmund starting from 5th January 2025.

With the allocation of two state-of-the-art Airbus A321neo family aircraft, the airline will operate a total of 43 aircraft during the winter season in Romania. Suceava remains an important city for Wizz Air, and the airline is pleased to once again expand its capacity there, adding over 169,000 new seats for the upcoming winter season. Wizz Air now offers 13 routes to six countries from Suceava “Ștefan cel Mare” International Airport.

In winter 2025, the airline will operate 192 routes from 13 Romanian airports, connecting passengers to 70 destinations across 24 countries. Over the past 19 years, Wizz Air has established eight operational bases in Bucharest Băneasa, Bucharest Otopeni, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iași, Sibiu, Suceava, and Timișoara. The airline currently employs more than 1,600 people in Romania.
