Violent robbery: two young people assaulted and robbed on Budapest’ tram – VIDEO

Budapest police are investigating a violent robbery that took place on the city’s busy 6 tram line, where two young passengers were attacked and robbed by two men shortly after midnight on 2 June. The incident occurred on a tram travelling from Jászai Mari Square towards Buda and has prompted a citywide search for one of the suspects, with authorities appealing to the public for assistance.

Attack and robbery on public transport

According to official police reports, the two suspects began arguing with the young victims before the situation escalated into a physical assault. The attackers punched and kicked the youths, targeting one of their backpacks. Once they seized the bag (which contained cash, personal documents, and two mobile phones), the assailants quickly exited the tram and fled the scene. Both victims sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack.

Swift police response: One suspect in custody

Budapest’s District II Police Department launched an immediate investigation into the case, classifying it as aggravated robbery, 24.hu writes. Within 12 hours, police identified and apprehended one of the suspects, a 37-year-old man named István B., at Nyugati Square. He has since been taken into custody, interrogated on suspicion of robbery, and authorities have initiated pre-trial detention proceedings against him. The search for his accomplice continues.

Appeal for public assistance

A video recording of the incident has been released by the police, and they are urging anyone who recognises the second suspect or has information about his identity or whereabouts to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling the 24-hour police hotline at 06-80-555-111 or the emergency number 112.
