Budapest hosts US-Russia consultation, says Hungarian foreign minister

Budapest has played host to a US-Russian science and research consultation, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said on Wednesday, underscoring that “the quickest path to peace is through dialogue”.

In response to a question at a joint press conference with Angola’s transport minister, Szijjártó confirmed that Budapest has hosted an American-Russian science and research consultation.

“We were recently contacted by American academic researchers and scientists who said they wanted to conduct specifically research-related and scientific dialogue with their Russian partners, and they asked us for support in having this take place in Hungary,” Szijjártó said.

“We, of course, gladly said yes to this initiative, and we provided a venue here in Budapest for a consultation between Russian and American researchers and scientists,” he added.

American and Russian civilised cooperation needed for safer world

Szijjártó also said that the “quickest path to peace” was through dialogue. “So we are happy to be at anyone’s service whenever Hungary or Budapest are requested as a venue for dialogue, and we are happy to provide a platform for US-Russian dialogue on any topic and between any players,” he said.

The minister said that “the world will be a safer place if the American and Russian parties are capable of civilised cooperation”. “We here in central Europe have clear experience of what it’s like when cooperation between the Americans and the Russians is good and when it’s not,” Szijjártó said.

“So when they contacted us asking for this US-Russian research consultation to take place in Budapest, we immediately said yes, and it was a successful two-day meeting,” he added.
