Hungarian unions to government: Follow EU rules or risk losing jobs, rights, and investment

The Hungarian Trade Union Federation issued a statement on Thursday insisting that the government was obliged to enact laws and implement rules drawn up by the European Commission “on the creation of quality jobs” and maintaining social dialogue, as well as “linking state investments and subsidies to social conditions, gender equality and the creation of conditions for a healthy workplace”.

The Hungarian unions based many of their joint proposals to the commission on the expectations of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), the statement said, adding that these cover issues such as accident prevention, environmental protection and quality work.

From the point of view of Hungarian trade unions, functioning social dialogue, collective bargaining and robust social partnerships at EU and national level are important, and should be based on strong democratic institutions, environmental sustainability, inclusive communities, social justice, quality jobs and services, high-quality public services and strong social protection systems, the statement said.
