BREAKING — Important change introduced regarding admission at 2 iconic Budapest baths, UPDATED

The Budapest Spas cPlc. has introduced an important change concerning admission at two iconic Budapest baths that many foreigners visit.

According to 24.hu, if you visit the official website of Budapest’s popular Rudas Thermal Bath, a pop-up warning appears, stating that children under 14 are no longer allowed to enter the facility. The reasons for this decision have not been shared. The news outlet reports that a similar rule will come into effect on 1 August at the Széchenyi Baths.

24.hu has promised to provide more information about the background of this decision as soon as they receive a response from Budapest Spas cPlc.

UPDATE: Reason behind the decision discovered

Blikk has discovered the reason for the unexpected ban. According to the Budapest Spas cPlc., a 2023 government decree introduced strict regulations regarding bathing in thermal pools for minors under 14.

It has been proven that water at 36–40 degrees Celsius adversely affects children’s bodies. Since April 2022, children under 14 have not been allowed in the Rudas and Dandár baths. In other baths, warning signs were used until recently, but these proved ineffective at the Széchenyi Thermal Bath. Indoors, only those aged 14 and over were permitted in the pools, while younger children could use the outdoor pools due to the lower water temperature.

However, as children under 14 occasionally “sneaked” into the indoor pools, the bath decided on a total ban.

Medical experts state that thermal water puts strain on the cardiovascular system and circulation, and the composition of medicinal waters may also affect hormonal development.
