New York-based Transcarpathian businessman awarded Hungarian honour for promoting Hungary-Ukraine ties

Sándor Róth, a US businessman hailing from Transcarpathia, has been awarded a Hungarian state award in recognition of his work to strengthen Hungarian-Ukrainian ties. The award was handed over by Levente Magyar, the parliamentary state secretary of the foreign ministry, on Sunday.
Róth received the Hungarian Order of Merit, Commander’s Cross with distinction. In his laudation, Magyar said Róth had been working on deepening the good neighbourly relations between the two countries for a long time “as a Transcarpathia-born businessman and patron of the arts, and has done a lot to strengthen economic, social and cultural ties and to promote mutual understanding.”
Róth has also contributed to humanitarian aid for Transcarpathian Hungarians since the start of the war, and aided the growing Ukrainian community in Hungary, Magyar said.
In his speech, Róth said it was an honour that his work in the interests of Transcarpathian Hungarians and Jews “has caught the Hungarian state’s attention”. While Transcarpathian Hungarians “are still not getting what they are due”, he said he hoped that the war in Ukraine would end in the near future and a peaceful co-existence would become possible.
