Tragic end for Hungarian-American teen after struggle with mental health and addiction

Jázmin Pellegrini, a 15-year-old teen of Hungarian descent, tragically died of a drug overdose in San Francisco, marking a heartbreaking conclusion to her battle with mental health issues and substance abuse. Her untimely death in April 2024 followed a harrowing journey through the American psychiatric system, shedding light on the challenges faced by young people grappling with these complex issues.

Jázmin’s story began to unravel when she was just 13 years old. Her mother, Krisztina Pellegrini, noticed concerning changes in her daughter’s behavior, including mood swings and aggressive outbursts, HVG writes based on the San Francisco Chronicle. These signs prompted Krisztina to seek professional help, marking the beginning of Jázmin’s tumultuous experience with the mental health care system.
Over the next two years, Jázmin was admitted to various psychiatric institutions across California. Her mother described this period as a “terrible ordeal”, suggesting that the treatment the teen received may not have adequately addressed her needs or may have even exacerbated her condition.
Final days
In February 2024, after running away from home, the teen was again hospitalised and treated with a highly addictive medication for hitting another patient. She was released on 17 April. That evening, she left home without shoes. Three days later, on 20 April, locals found Jázmin on a San Francisco street, lying face down on a driveway.
Tragically, Jázmin could not be saved and died of a drug overdose. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine were found in the teen’s system.
Now, Jázmin’s family is demanding answers from police in San Francisco and the East Bay. They have conducted their own neighborhood inquiry, seeking video footage, witnesses, and information about the circumstances of Jázmin’s death.
