Tourists beware: Yellow “taxis” are scamming visitors at a popular Hungarian festival

One of the Balaton region’s most popular festivals, VeszprémFest, was held over several days this July. While the festival brought music and celebration to the Lake Balaton region, it has also attracted opportunistic scam drivers pretending to be legitimate taxis. Be careful before hopping into a yellow car!
Fake taxis charging outrageous fares
According to a public warning from Bakony Taxi, unlicensed drivers with yellow vehicles have appeared in the city during the event, offering overpriced rides, often targeting tourists unfamiliar with local services. These cars may look like official taxis, but they are not affiliated with any licensed company.
The company strongly advises all visitors to order taxis only via phone or a dedicated app. By doing so, passengers receive exact details about the vehicle, including the license plate, car type, and colour. In the app, the ride can even be tracked in real time, reducing the risk of mistaken identity.

How to stay safe and avoid being overcharged
Bakony Taxi emphasises that all official partners have clear identification markings, which should be checked before entering the vehicle. Just because a car is yellow doesn’t mean it’s trustworthy.
This warning is especially important for foreign visitors who may be unfamiliar with how local taxi services work and could fall victim to these well-disguised scams. Being cautious and using only official booking channels can save you from a very expensive ride.
