Based on the fact that most people spend one-third of their life working, choosing a career or modifying the current one is undoubtedly an important decision. But which are the most prestigious professions in Hungary? Which ones are overpaid or underpaid, and which profession should be chosen by a young adult? We would like to shed some light on the answers.

Leaving school puts young adults in a difficult situation, as they have to decide on the big question: “what career should I choose that I will enjoy and I can make a good living from it?” The question is certainly not easy to answer; still, a freshly published research revealed which are the most prestigious professions in Hungary, which are the ones with the highest salary, and which are recommended to young adults facing career choice.

Professional Recognition Ranking 2021

The aim of the research carried out by the Hungarian news portal Pénzcentrum was the indication of the ranking of recognition of professions in Hungary. The respondents had to mark on a scale how well their job was acknowledged in Hungary, based on their own opinion.

Accordingly, doctors, engineers, and lawyers are at the top of the list, with the greatest extent of prestige.

The top-ranked professions are followed by the programmers, bankers, marketing experts, accountants, local government representatives in the midfield who also belong to Hungary’s relatively prestigious jobs.

At the bottom of the list, we can find the nurses, teachers, kindergarten teachers, police officers, and social workers, which are less recognized professions in Hungary, based on the responses.

In the field of recognition, the weakest category is public works in Hungary. Accordingly, 95% of the respondents think that public workers are less or not recognized at all.

The least scores were achieved in the category of waste management, librarian, social worker, postman, and shop sales professions.

Professions Ranking based on Social Importance

In terms of social importance, teachers and nurses are at the top of the list, followed by kindergarten teachers at the top5 (even though in terms of prestige, they did not achieve good results). The lawyers were ranked in the middle. Marketing experts, interestingly, are ranked among the last ones, while being top-ranked on the list of recognition.

The research also examined the question of salary.

The most underpaid professions are the jobs of nurses, social workers, and teachers, while bankers, lawyers, and marketing experts are the most overpaid, according to respondents.

The profession of engineer, accountant, dentist, beautician, manicurist turned out to be the most appropriately paid according to the answers.

Concerning young adults facing a career choice, most of the respondents recommended the professions: engineer, programmer, and doctor, while police, social worker, and librarians were the least suggested jobs. The careers: lawyer, accountant, and craftsman occupied a better place, but the professions: teacher, nurse, and municipal representative are all less popular. This, in turn, has a strong correlation to salary, social importance, and recognition.
