Hungarian cuisine has many iconic meals every Hungarian knows and has tried at least once. Most of these restaurants work with the finest Hungarian vegetables, fruit, meat, fish and other and every one of them has a Hungarian region where they come from.

North Hungary

Northern Great Plain

This region’s cultural centre and the most significant city is Debrecen. The Great Plain of Hortobágy is also in this area which was the country’s first national park. The region has many exciting ingredients including the Hungarian Grey Cattle, which is also a national Hungarikum alongside with the Mangalica. Other well-known ingredients include plum, apple, cabbage, and truffle.

Southern Great Plain

The region’s centre is the Hungarian city of Szeged known for its iconic fish soup. No wonder that the area’s main ingredient are the common carp, catfish, onions from Makó and red paprika. According to a common Hungarian stereotype, Hungarians put paprika in every dish, even desserts… Other ingredients include peach, pear, duck and goose.

Southern Transdanubia

The centre of this region is Pécs known for its Mediterranean climate and famous attractions like the Mosque of Pasha Qasim and the Christian chambers which is also the part of the UNESCO World Heritage sights. Its notable Hungarian ingredients include the buffalo, grey cattle, Agaricus, wild boar, peach, cabbage, common quail and paprika.

Western Transdanubia

With the centre of Győr, this region has many sights to see. The most famous ones are the thermal lake of Hévíz, the Archabbey of Pannonhalma, the Festetics Castle in Keszthely and the western coast of Lake Balaton. Its main ingredients are carrot, apple, squash and chestnut.
