The irony of pride: Government that banned it suggests its venue for Budapest Pride

Justice Minister Bence Tuzson on Tuesday proposed Kincsem Park as an alternative location for this year’s Budapest Pride march, adding that the event must be held at a venue where it can be guaranteed that children do not witness it.

Tuzson said in a video on Facebook that police had banned this year’s Budapest Pride march at its originally planned location, because if it is held in central Budapest, children’s rights cannot be guaranteed.

“All of which does not mean that the right of assembly cannot be practiced, if children’s rights are also fully respected,” he said. As a result, he proposed to the organisers, the police and the ministry of the interior to select a new location for holding the event, and said it could be Kincsem Park, a race course and equestrian venue in Budapest’s 7th district.

“Kincsem Park is large and safe, and a march can be held there while making sure that children are not witnessing the event,” he said.
