Major telecom service outages scheduled across Hungary in early August

Hungary’s leading telecom provider, Magyar Telekom, has announced widespread service outages for the first half of August, affecting major cities and smaller towns alike, including Budapest. The disruptions will impact home internet, television, and landline phone services, typically lasting several hours.
Which cities will be affected?
According to Telekom, maintenance work will begin on Monday, 4 August, causing periodic outages in the following areas:
Full outage on August 4 (8:00 AM–5:00 PM):
Budapest, District III (1032)
Pécs (ZIP codes: 7628, 7629, 7630)
Szombathely (9700, 9707)
As reported by ATV, the expected downtime could last up to 180 minutes, meaning home internet, TV, and landline services may be unavailable for up to three hours in these areas.
Other affected towns:
- Noszvaj and Szomolya: 5 August, until 6:00 AM, 240-minute outage
Bácsszentgyörgy, Csátalja, Dávod, Gara, Hercegszántó: 5 August, until 7:00 AM, 60-minute outage
Mezőszentgyörgy: Until 15 August, 180-minute outage
What to do if service is not restored?
The company advises all customers to restart their digital routers/modems if issues persist beyond the scheduled maintenance window, as this often restores connectivity automatically.
If the problem continues, Telekom’s customer service can be reached toll-free at 1414 from within the Telekom network.
You can now use more mobile data abroad
Hungarians can now enjoy increased mobile data allowances when abroad. The country’s three major telecom providers have expanded roaming data limits on their subscription plans, restructured their mobile packages, and waived the annual inflation-based price increase for this year, according to a mid-year report published on Wednesday by the National Media and Communications Authority (NMHH).
The NMHH emphasised its role in monitoring competition in the mobile market, particularly with regard to changes in subscription packages. The analysis of the first half of 2025 found that all three major providers—Magyar Telekom Nyrt., One Magyarország Zrt., and Yettel Magyarország Zrt.—increased their roaming data allowances and updated their subscription offers. Notably, there was no inflation-based fee rise this year.
As in previous years, the report focused on market conditions in the first half of 2025, detailing and comparing the providers’ consumer subscription plans.
The study showed that all three telecom companies adjusted their data plans in early 2025 to comply with EU Regulation 2022/612, issued by the European Parliament and Council. During this period, the companies introduced new subscription packages and, with the exception of One, phased out their previous offerings.
Compared to the past two years, customers benefited in 2025 from the absence of an inflation-linked price adjustment—a decision taken following consultations with the Ministry for National Economy in April. As a result, all three providers agreed to suspend such fee increases for at least one year.
