Speaker of Hungraian Parliament: ‘Europe problem not solution’

Budapest, September 13 (MTI) – Europe is in a crisis at the core of which is not migration but a deep intellectual and moral crisis, which feeds into a political crisis, Speaker of Parliament Laszlo Kover said.

“Europe and the European Union are not the solutions, but they are the problem,” Kover said in an interview public radio’s Sunday morning programme.

In response to US President Barack Obama’s remarks that Europe can take more migrants, Kover said the US had built a “stronger and longer wall on the Mexican border than Hungary could ever possibly build or aspire to build on the Hungarian-Serbian border.” Further, the US has responsibility in creating the chaos in the areas that migrants are now fleeing to come to Europe, he added. He said the US does not appear to be expressing much sympathy for its European allies.

He said Hungary was again in a crossfire, which is “completely unjustified and undignified”.

Kover said Europe must decide how to interpret migration, whether to see it as a means to fill labour shortages created on the back of population decline or as a security risk. Recent attacks in London and Paris point to failure in integrating people coming to Europe with different cultural backgrounds, he said.

It is difficult to see how European states want to integrate new entrants now when they had failed to integrate the millions they willingly welcomed as cheap labour before, Kover said.

He rejected suggestions of a rift in the ruling Fidesz party.
