Sovereignty Protection Office says Hungary’s sovereignty was violated multiple times

The Sovereignty Protection Office on Thursday said Hungary had good reason to strengthen its sovereignty protection laws in light of the “abuses” around the 2022 general election, the scandals surrounding American aid agency USAID, and steps taken by European Union institutions “in violation of national sovereignty”.
The authority called for a distinction to be made between “real civil organisations” and organisations that engage in political activity. It said such organisations should be subject to the same regulations that apply to political parties and should be prohibited from accepting foreign funding. The authority said “any loopholes which foreign interest groups take advantage of to fund activities influencing Hungarian public life” should be closed.
The office said it was important to prohibit any form of financing in the case of such organisations that enabled foreign actors “to conceal their identity”.
It said these laws had to be made enforceable, and organisations engaging in political activity had to be made transparent and free from outside influence”. The authority said it was drafting the necessary proposals that would allow it to be more effective in taking action against such organisations financed from abroad.
