Socialists oppose automatic distribution of migrants, back relocation scheme

Budapest, November 9 (MTI) – The opposition Socialists disapprove of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s proposal for “mandatory and automatically-triggered system” of distributing migrants, but supports a system to temporarily relocate migrants who have already applied for asylum, lawmaker Zsolt Molnar said.

Referring to Juncker’s proposal for automatically distributing asylum seekers among EU member states when mass influxes occur, Molnar, who heads parliament’s national security committee, told public Kossuth Radio that it is impossible to “automatically place everyone who says they want to be a refugee in a distribution system and force member states to accept them”.

Molnar said that under the “failed” Dublin rules, Hungary is faced with having to take in 150,000-170,000 people awaiting deportation in other EU countries. This would be prevented by a temporary relocation and resettlement scheme, which would see the distribution of around 160,000 migrants — mainly from Greece and Italy — who have already applied for asylum.

Molnar said the scheme should take into account the capacity and population of EU member states. Under the scheme, Hungary would have to take in 2,000 people over the course of two years, he added.

Molnar said Hungary’s ruling parties tend to “lump” the two “very different quota systems” into the same category.
