Socialists demand army reform, expansion

Budapest, November 22 (MTI) – The opposition Socialist Party has demanded that the government institute reforms to the Hungarian armed forces and boost the number of soldiers.

Socialist MP Marta Demeter told a news conference on Sunday that the armed forces are understaffed, adding that the peacetime force should number 29,700 servicemen but it was 5,500 below this figure.

She said the force had been dwindling from year to year for several years and resources devoted to the armed forces had “sunk to a low point” after 2010.

The Socialist politician said that lawmakers had last week discussed army legislation, in light of the migration situation, that would contravene the constitution and place an “extreme burden” on the current forces.
