PHOTOS: Severe storm causes millions in damage on Sziget Festival’s island, site remains closed

Early-week storms caused extensive damage on Óbuda Island, the island on which Sziget Fesztival is held every year, which remains closed to the public. On Friday, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony reported via Facebook that approximately 600 trees were damaged, 100 were completely uprooted, and total damages in the area have reached HUF 300 million (EUR 751.6 thousand).
Works ongoing to repair the damages on Óbuda Island
Experts from Budapesti Közművek Nonprofit Plc. (BKM) Főkert have been working around the clock to repair the storm’s destruction and restore safety as soon as possible. The mayor emphasised that public and worker safety is the top priority, which is why the island will remain closed over the weekend, 24.hu reported.

The storm not only severely damaged trees but also struck key infrastructure, making the area officially hazardous. Restoration efforts are ongoing, and the island will gradually reopen to visitors, but for now, authorities are asking for residents’ patience and understanding. Mayor Karácsony encouraged people seeking outdoor recreation this weekend to visit other parks in the capital that remain safe and accessible.
Due to the scale of the damage, Óbuda Island is currently completely off-limits. Authorities warn that full restoration will take time before the area is once again safe for public access.

Óbuda Island is one of Budapest’s most popular recreational areas, offering a unique mix of nature and urban relaxation. The recent storm, however, has posed a significant challenge to both city officials and maintenance crews, who are working diligently to restore the island’s former condition and reopen it to visitors.
Alongside the continuous efforts of city workers, public cooperation and patience are critical for successful recovery. Budapest city leadership is closely monitoring the situation and will keep residents updated as developments unfold.
