Scorching heat followed by storms: Hail and gale-force winds set to hit Hungary

Hungary is in for a dramatic weather shift this weekend as record-breaking heat will be followed by violent thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds. Meteorologists have issued multiple weather warnings ahead of Saturday evening’s expected weather front.

Heatwave warnings across the country

Saturday will bring exceptionally hot and sunny conditions throughout most parts of Hungary. According to the national meteorological service HungaroMet, average daily temperatures may exceed 25°C in nearly all regions, with the southeastern areas potentially hitting or surpassing 27°C. In some places, afternoon highs could reach between 30°C and 36°C, challenging or even surpassing previous heat records for this time of year.

Due to the high temperatures, second-level heat alerts have been issued in several counties. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Storms brewing over the Alps

However, this summer-like weather won’t last long. Meteorologists are closely monitoring a cold front approaching from the northwest. Starting in the late afternoon or early evening, thunderstorms forming over the Austrian Alps could sweep into Hungary, particularly affecting the northwestern regions.

These storms could become severe, bringing:

  • Large hailstones, potentially exceeding 2 cm in diameter
  • Gale-force wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h in places
  • Heavy downpours in a short period of time

While the precise path and intensity of these storms remain uncertain, authorities are warning of potentially dangerous conditions as the day progresses.

Sunday brings a cooldown

By Sunday, the cold front will move further southeast, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures across much of the country. Highs will vary significantly, ranging from 22°C in the northwest to over 30°C in the southeast. Winds will shift from the southwest to the northwest and intensify, especially in western and central Hungary, where gusts could again reach stormy levels.

While sunny spells are still expected in many areas, the weather will remain unstable. Showers and thunderstorms may form again, especially in western, southwestern, and northeastern Hungary.

What to expect

Those spending the weekend outdoors or planning to travel across Hungary should be prepared for sudden weather changes. Saturday may feel like the peak of summer, but by Sunday evening, temperatures could fall sharply, with wind and rain sweeping across parts of the country.

Hungarian emergency services are on alert, and updates from the national meteorological service will be provided as the situation develops. Visitors and locals alike are advised to monitor the weather closely and take precautions, especially in areas under storm warnings.
