Sanctions against Russia not to impact Paks upgrade, says govt commissioner

(MTI) – International sanctions introduced against Russia will not impact the planned upgrade of Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant, Attila Aszodi, the government commissioner in charge of the project, said on Monday evening.

Hungary signed an intergovernmental agreement with Russia in January 2014 aimed at building two new blocks to the plant using a 10 billion euro Russian loan.

Asked about the fact that the Russian lender has been included in the list of banks affected by the sanctions, Aszodi responded that the sanctions restricted banks’ raising capital rather than funding activities.

The agreement could be re-opened and another bank involved, Aszodi told public Duna TV, but added that at present it was not necessary.

He said there were “very intensive” talks under way with the Russian partner to clarify technical and other details of the project.
