Ryanair cancels key Budapest route: Grave impact on travel and tourism

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has recently announced significant changes to its flight network, affecting several routes across the UK, Spain, and Morocco. The airline’s decision to cancel its Bournemouth to Budapest route by April 2025 marks a notable shift in its European operations.

Bournemouth to Budapest route cancellation

The Bournemouth to Budapest route, launched in 2023, provided a direct link between southern England and the Hungarian capital, catering to both leisure and business travellers. However, Ryanair has opted to discontinue this service as part of its broader restructuring efforts, the Daily Echo reports. This move follows earlier reductions in flights to Spain and the cessation of services from Bournemouth to Agadir, Morocco.

According to TTW, industry experts attribute these cuts to economic pressures, fluctuating demand, and operational adjustments in response to rising fuel costs and regulatory changes. The cancellation of the Bournemouth to Budapest route highlights the growing challenges faced by regional UK airports, which are seeing major carriers reduce their presence. This trend forces many travellers to reroute through larger hubs like London Heathrow or Gatwick, potentially impacting local economies reliant on air travel.

Petitions and public response

In response to the cancellation, residents have initiated online petitions, garnering nearly 1,000 signatures. These efforts aim to persuade Ryanair to reconsider its decision, emphasising the convenience and efficiency of the Bournemouth to Budapest route for families and frequent travellers.

Losing Budapest, a beloved destination

Budapest has long been a favoured European destination for UK travellers, known for its historic sites, thermal baths, and vibrant nightlife. The loss of direct flights may reduce tourism between the two countries, making travel less accessible and more expensive for British tourists heading to Hungary.

Despite these regional cuts, Ryanair is expanding its operations in London, announcing a Summer 2025 schedule with 206 routes from the UK capital, including seven new destinations from Stansted. This expansion reflects a strategic focus on larger, high-traffic hubs, even though it might mean leaving travellers in regional areas with fewer budget-friendly flight options.
