State-owned air traffic controller HungaroControl inaugurated a HUF 8bn (EUR 20 million) remote tower control system on Tuesday.

National Economy Minister Márton Nagy called the investment an “unprecedented solution” and said his ministry, HungaroControl and Liszt Ferenc International Airport would make every effort to manage traffic smoothly during the peak summer season.

He noted that passenger numbers at Liszt Ferenc had climbed by 3 million to 17.6 million in 2024, while freight volume had risen by 50pc to 300,000 tonnes.

The modular integrated remote tower control system (mirTWR) will be used at Liszt Ferenc initially and at other airports around the country later.

Norway’s Indra Navia supplied the technology for the project that was co-financed by the European Union.
