Recent demonstrations against nuclear agreement

(MTI) – About 500 people protested an agreement between Hungary and Russia on the upgrade of the Paks nuclear power plant in Budapest yesterday.

The demonstration, in front of the National Economy Ministry, was organised by Energiaklub, Greenpeace, the Air Workgroup, the Hungarian Nature Preservation Association, Paks Vobiscum? and Preservation Society. Several politicians from small opposition party LMP also participated.

Laszlo Majtenyi, who heads the Eotvos Karoly Institute, said Hungary was in no way committed by the agreement on the upgrade because it had been sealed in secret and went against Hungary’s constitutional law.

Ada Amon of Energiaklub said the Paks upgrade should not take place because it is not in Hungary’s interest to force itself into energy dependence on Russia once again.

The demonstrators carried placards inscribed with “No Paks pact!”, “Comrades welcome”, “Chernobyl for this much money?” and “Russian roulette”.

The demonstrators, many of whom wore “Stop Paks” stickers, chanted “we won’t allow it”.

Russia’s Rosatom will build two blocks at the Paks plant under an agreement signed early in January. Eighty percent of the project’s cost will be financed with a 10 billion euro credit line from Russia.
