Pro-government survey: Orbán ‘almost twice as popular as Márki-Zay’

Committed voters who would prefer Viktor Orbán as prime minister outweigh those who back Péter Márki-Zay by almost 2:1, a March survey by Századvég shows.

Fully 62 percent preferred the incumbent as against 32 percent in favour of the prime ministerial candidate of the united opposition, the think-thank said on Monday.

In October last year, Márki-Zay had the support of 41 percent of Szazadveg’s respondents.

Also, Orbán’s popularity in Budapest is higher than Márki-Zay’s, with 52 percent of the capital city’s committed voters behind the incumbent compared with 43 percent for the mayor of Hodmezovasarhely.

When it comes to large cities and towns around the country, Orbán has 58 percent and 68 percent backing respectively, while in smaller towns and villages he is preferred by 66 percent or active voters.

Meanwhile, a tendency to prefer Márki-Zay among uncertain voters only accounts for 10 percent of them.

Orbán is also more popular among young voters, with 48 percent of those aged 18-29 preferring the prime minister as against 41 percent for Márki-Zay.

Századvég found that 45 percent of respondents identifying as political centrists supported Orbán as against 44 percent who preferred his challenger.
