President Sulyok invites pontiff to Hungary

President Tamás Sulyok has invited Pope Leo XIV “to visit Hungary again as soon as he can”, according to a statement from the presidential office sent to MTI on Sunday.

Sulyok personally congratulated the new pontiff on his election after attending mass in the Vatican on Sunday morning. The pope shook hands with heads of the delegations in attendance, including the Hungarian president.

President Sulyok leads the official Hungarian delegation at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Sunday. The delegation which includes Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén will participate in Holy Mass marking the beginning of the new pontiff’s Petrine Ministry in St. Peter’s Square.

After the ceremony, Pope Leo XIV will meet public dignitaries from all over the world, including representatives of the Hungarian delegation. On the day of Leo XIV’s election, President Sulyok expressed his best wishes to the new pope in a letter.
