What are these pictograms at railway crossings around Lake Balaton?

To help prevent accidents, warning pictograms have been painted at 42 railway crossings in the Lake Balaton region, the MÁV Group announced on Saturday.

Too many accidents at railway crossings

In a statement, the company emphasised that 30 accidents have already occurred this year at railway crossings across the MÁV network, resulting in ten fatalities caused by either traffic rule violations or inattention.

As the statement noted, summer is a time when many people travel by car, bicycle, or on foot, making it especially important to raise awareness about adhering to traffic regulations.

The newly painted pictograms aim to warn road users of the dangers of using mobile phones or wearing headphones while crossing. “We hope that the brightly colored, well-placed warning signs will catch people’s attention—even if they’re staring at a screen,” the statement read.

Safety campaign around Lake Balaton

MÁV also reported that during the summer holidays, they are reinforcing their safety campaign around Lake Balaton with on-site railway safety awareness events.

“Our goal is to make people pause for a moment at crossings—and perhaps prevent a tragedy. We may never know how many accidents we’re able to avoid, but that’s not the point. What matters is saving lives—and supporting our train drivers, for whom each accident is a serious emotional burden,” said MÁV CEO Zsolt Hegyi, who urged all road users to approach railway crossings with heightened caution.

“Responsibility is shared, and paying attention can save lives,” he concluded.
