New miracle drug’s surprising side effect: stunned users report penis enlargement

Ozempic, the brand name for semaglutide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist), has made impressive inroads in Hungary as well—no surprise, since many see it as a shortcut to weight loss, sidestepping the need for exhausting workouts and strict diets. Though originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, a growing number of people—incorrectly—are using it to shed pounds. But the drug comes with a host of side effects. Most recently, some users have reported it made their penis appear larger.

Diabetes drug enlarges penis size?

According to a report by LadBible, demand for Ozempic has surged since its U.S. approval in 2017. Designed for individuals with type 2 diabetes—whose bodies don’t produce enough insulin—it has become widely used, often without proper medical oversight, simply because everyone seems to know a doctor who’s willing to write a prescription. The reason is clear: the drug not only lowers blood sugar, it also suppresses appetite, making it popular for weight loss, even among people without diabetes. For example, tennis star Serena Williams was recently suspected of using the drug to achieve her noticeable weight loss.

While it’s unclear whether she has, many are using the drug for off-label weight loss purposes, fueling major demand and even periodic shortages. Alongside this trend is a rise in reports of unusual side effects, including apparent penis enlargement.

While few men are likely to complain about this particular side effect, Dr. Jen Caudle has weighed in on the phenomenon. Her explanation? It’s not that the penis is actually growing; it’s that the rest of the body is shrinking. As men lose weight, particularly in the abdominal area, their unchanged penis size appears more prominent by comparison. You can watch her video here:

Studies document additional side effects

Dr. Caudle noted that there are no confirmed studies or clinical papers suggesting any physiological changes to penis size during Ozempic use. The visual effect is purely due to fat loss around the waistline and in the thighs, making the anatomy look larger than before.

Another, less amusing side effect is a drop in libido. Some reports suggest that Ozempic not only lowers blood sugar but may also reduce dopamine activity in the brain, a key neurotransmitter linked to sexual desire.

Many people in Hungary are also using Ozempic injections. In March, a manufacturing defect led to the recall of the 1 mg injectable solution, causing a temporary shortage. A contemporaneous HVG article reported that Ozempic can aid in weight loss, reduce the risk of heart attack, and even slow aging. However, some studies warn of potential downsides, including increased risk of joint inflammation and a significantly higher chance of developing pancreatitis.
