Orban’s Vienna talks “damage control”, say Socialists

Budapest, September 25 (MTI) – The Hungarian prime minister’s visit to Vienna for talks with Austrian leaders indicates that there had been no de facto coordination between the two countries during the migrant crisis at all, the opposition Socialists said on Friday.

The Hungarian government has until now communicated with its neighbours including Austria only through messages, diplomatic notes and harsh statements, party leader Jozsef Tobias told MTI.

“What the government is doing now is damage control,” he said, in reaction to Viktor Orban’s talks with Chancellor Werner Faymann and Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mitterlehner.

It has become clear that there is no “Hungarian way” for resolving the migration issue and that the government is incapable of tackling the situation alone, Tobias said.

The Socialists demand that the government should guarantee the security of the Hungarian people through a common European solution and provide humane treatment for the migrants crossing Hungary, he said.
