Orban-Cameron meeting to cover intl conflicts, says Szijjarto

Budapest, January 7 (MTI) – This afternoon’s meeting between Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his British counterpart, David Cameron, will touch on the Syrian conflict and the international efforts against terrorism, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told public news channel M1 on Thursday.

The minister said an important aspect of the two countries’ relations is their joint fight against terrorism, specifically noting the international coalition against the Islamic State militant group.

Szijjarto said there are no ongoing disputes between the two countries, noting that Britain is an important trading partner for Hungary. He said there are a significant number of British firms doing business in Hungary, employing tens of thousands of Hungarians.

Referring to the UK’s renegotiation of its relationship with the European Union, Szijjarto said an EU member state recommending reforms in order to strengthen the bloc “can in no way be considered blackmail”.

On the subject of Orban’s private meeting with Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), on Wednesday, Szijjarto said the Polish foreign minister is scheduled to visit Hungary soon while the two countries’ prime ministers are set to hold an official bilateral meeting in early February. The two countries are expected to maintain especially dynamic relations in the future, he said.
