Open letter to the Hungarian President from a Syrian-Hungarian man: am I mixed race?
In an open letter, a half-Syrian, half-Hungarian man asked Katalin Novák whether he was considered mixed race.
“Dear Madam President! As a half-Syrian, half-Hungarian citizen, I address the following questions to you, who expresses the unity of the nation, regarding the speech of the Hungarian Prime Minister in Tusványos on 23 July 2022.” – These are the opening lines of an open letter published on Facebook. The author is Viktor Nassli, registered as a Hungarian citizen, and he sent the letter to Katalin Novák in response to Viktor Orbán’s racist speech, reports Telex.hu.
Speaking in Tusványos, the Prime Minister said:
“There is a world where European peoples are mixed up with those from outside Europe. (…) In the Carpathian Basin, we are not a mixed race, but quite simply a mixture of peoples living in our own European homeland. (…) We are willing to mix with each other, but we do not want to become a mixed race”.
In the open letter, Viktor Nassli asked Katalin Novák, among other things, whether or not he is of mixed race; where his children, three-quarters of whom are of Hungarian origin, can be classified; whether he has the possibility to Hungarianise himself, perhaps by blood transfusions; and where he can turn to have the question of whether the Prime Minister’s speech can be considered incitement against his person investigated.
