One of Budapest’s oldest patisseries closes after 65 years due to increase in prices
Open for sixty-five years, Budapest Cukrászda (Budapest Patisserie) is closing due to increasing overhead prices.
We report on many facilities, restaurants, spas closing due to the increasing prices. Now, another iconic place is forced to shut down after decades of welcoming sweet-toothed guests: Budapest Cukrászda.
“Dear guests! We regret to inform you that due to economic reasons, we have been forced to close our patisserie for good. Thank you for your trust in us over the past decades,” the Budapest Cukrászda, which has been operating for 65 years on Bródy Sándor Street in Budapest, posted on Facebook.
When Telex phoned to find out more about the specific reasons for the closure, one of the devastated employees told them that it was already the third generation that has been running the family business. According to Facebook comments, the confectionery is still very popular, with a traditional pre-change of regime (1989) illuminated sign above the entrance advertising the name of the shop.
Józsefváros Újság also asked them about the reasons for the closure, and they were told that the drastic increase in overheads, the rise in the price of raw materials and high inflation in general had all combined to lead to the decision. “We have collapsed, there is no external help”, they wrote in their reply to Józsefváros Újság.
“I am very sad! 😢 My favourite! And if I promise to go for cookies every week?!”,
one commenter wrote under the post announcing the closure.
“Angry birds, Rubik’s cube, ice magic, dog and cat cake and I could list all the wonders you did to make my kids’ birthdays special. I’m sorry – but I also understand that when you have to sell a cake for over 1000 Forints to get the maths out, there isn’t enough demand. I’m sorry, I’m grieving and I hope you will reopen one day. 🙏”,
wrote another sad customer. Many other people commented that Budapest Cukrászda was their favourite patisserie and that they all wish the place would open again one day.
