October 23 – 1956 freedom fighters got strength from Horthy government, says Vona

Budapest (MTI) – The freedom fighters of Hungary’s ill-fated 1956 anti-Soviet uprising drew their strength from the patriotic interwar regime of Miklos Horthy, Gabor Vona, leader of the radical nationalist Jobbik party, said at a commemoration on Friday.

The 1956 revolution was “the most noble act” in Europe’s postwar history, Vona said in Corvin Alley, a stronghold of revolutionaries in 1956, adding that what made it beautiful was that it seemed hopeless at the time.

He said that Hungarians “always emerged as the moral victors” from hopeless battles throughout history.

Vona said that “with the approaching conflicts”, Hungary is once again in need of “fresh, youthful and lively patriotism” and for its youth “to gain strength both in body and soul”. On that note, he reiterated Jobbik’s proposal that Hungary should introduce voluntary military service, arguing that “bearded ladies” are of no use in protecting Europe.
