PHOTOS: New, modern trams travel across Europe to join Budapest’s public transport network

Budapest is undergoing a transformative upgrade to its public transportation system with the arrival of state-of-the-art CAF trams. As part of a long-term modernisation plan, these new vehicles promise enhanced accessibility, comfort, and sustainability for residents and visitors alike.

Arrival of new CAF trams

The latest CAF tram arrived in Budapest on 8 April 2025, continuing the delivery of a fleet of 51 vehicles ordered by the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK). Manufactured in Zaragoza, Spain, the trams are transported via a complex route—first by ship to Belgium and then by truck to Budapest. Upon arrival, each tram undergoes rigorous testing and certification before entering service. The fleet is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026.

Features and benefits

These modern trams are designed with cutting-edge technology and advanced features like:

  • Low-floor design: Ensures easy access for passengers with mobility challenges, including wheelchair users and parents with strollers.
  • Energy efficiency: Regenerative braking systems allow energy generated during braking to be fed back into the network.
  • Enhanced comfort: Upgraded air conditioning systems, spacious interiors, and improved body structures provide a smoother ride.
  • Capacity: The fleet includes both short (34-meter) and long (56-meter) models, accommodating up to 562 passengers on the larger units.

Impact on accessibility

The introduction of these trams will increase the proportion of low-floor vehicles in Budapest’s tram network from 30% to 40%. This improvement aligns with efforts to make public transportation more inclusive and accessible across the city. Key lines such as 1, 14, 42, 50, and 69 will benefit from these upgrades. Additional routes—including lines 2, 23, 24, 51A, and 62—are expected to feature modern trams once EU funding for infrastructure improvements is secured.

Beyond the current fleet of 51 trams, BKK is preparing a tender for over 100 additional modern vehicles by 2030. The expanded fleet will further reduce environmental impact while enhancing service quality for passengers.

A legacy of innovation

Budapest’s tram network is one of Europe’s largest, with over 38 lines spanning 174 kilometers. The modernisation effort not only preserves this legacy but also positions Budapest as a leader in urban mobility innovation. With these upgrades, residents and visitors can expect a state-of-the-art travel experience that combines historical charm with modern convenience.
