Motorists fined almost EUR 3.2m since speedcam system introduced

Budapest, May 17 (MTI) – Fines levied on motorists whose violations were caught on camera reached almost 1 billion forints (EUR 3.2m) in the first month of operation of a new traffic monitoring system, business daily Világgazdaság said on Tuesday.

Some 29,000 speeders have been caught by the system dubbed VEDA since its launch in April, the paper said. Fines were levied on 116 motorists for not wearing a seatbelt, on 68 for driving in the breakdown lane and on 27 for running a red light.

The VEDA system aims to support a European Union goal to halve road fatalities from 2010 levels within four years.
