MEP Márton Gyöngyösi (Non-attached Member of the European Parliament) has published a video message in which he talks about how to represent Hungary’s interests in the EU:
Text version of video message:
“István Széchenyi said: Let’s dare to be great! What he meant was that we should dare to take our fate in our own hands and shape the status of our nation.
Today, we are in a fortunate situation to be sitting at the EU table as an equal party.
This is what we’ve been dreaming of for centuries.
Yet we fail to use it.
The Socialists were characterized by the slogan of “Let’s dare to be small”, they just wanted to sign everything, they failed to understand that Brussels is not Moscow, you don’t have to say yes to everything.
On the other hand, Fidesz twists Széchenyi’s idea, suggesting as if national greatness equalled extreme national stubbornness and hysteria.
Europe is puzzled to see a series of offended vetoes and threats. They are not used to this, and Hungary will bear the brunt of it later.
What is happening today is not the expression of our greatness. It is a temper tantrum about ending up alone.
Even though Hungary’s interests could be represented well, too: dispute where you need to and find allies where you can. We could create an atmosphere where the EU could have more Hungarian leaders.
For me, Széchenyi’s idea means that we should dare to believe there is no need to kowtow or to throw hissy fits, either. All we need is to believe in ourselves, be reliable and work to the best of our abilities.”
