The Hungarian government has approved the plans for the new Memorial Site of the Hungarian National Anthem in Szatmárcseke, the birthplace of the anthem’s author, Ferenc Kölcsey. In addition to the memorial itself, the new building will feature an exhibition dedicated to Kölcsey’s life and work.

New memorial site for the Hungarian National Anthem

According to a Facebook post by State Secretary for Architecture Regő Lánszki, the Orbán government plans to construct a building in Szatmárcseke that will serve as the memorial site of the Hungarian National Anthem and host an exhibition dedicated to its author, Ferenc Kölcsey.

Lánszki stated that they aim to create a space worthy of Kölcsey and the anthem—a contemporary work of art that authentically preserves the memory of both the poet and his home. At the same time, the building will be modern, energy-efficient, and harmoniously integrated into its surroundings.

The winning design was submitted by Gergő Turi, architect at Triskell Épülettervező Ltd. According to Lánszki, Mr Turi has a deep understanding of how to integrate a large building into the fabric of a small settlement. The population of the eastern Hungarian village of Szatmárcseke is just 1,468.

Lánszki shared that they received 39 plans, and the evaluation committee highlighted eight submissions.

The birth of the anthem and the Day of Hungarian Culture

According to Magyar Építők, the new building will serve three main functions: it will house the Kölcsey exhibition, support the cultural activities of the local government, and operate as a tourism and visitor centre. It was also a key requirement that the structure be suitable for hosting large-scale commemorative events.

Ferenc Kölcsey played a vital role in Hungary’s reform era leading up to the 1848 civic revolution. He composed the current Hungarian National Anthem in Szatmárcseke, completing it on 22 January 1823. In honour of this, Hungary celebrates the Day of Hungarian Culture each year on 22 January.
