Man receives 3-year probation for Holocaust denial

Budapest, January 21 (MTI) – A Pest county court has handed down in a non-final ruling a three-year probation to a man under a law which sanctions the public denial of crimes committed by the National Socialist or Communist regimes.

The court said in a statement on Thursday that the accused had made public remarks, which were filmed, denying the existence of the Holocaust at an event held by the Horthy Miklos Friendship Society in summer 2012. He attributed his belief to Nobel literature laureate Imre Kertesz, proclaiming, “I quote Imre Kertesz: there was no Holocaust…”

The accused has admitted to making the statements. The lawyer of the accused said they would appeal the verdict.
