LMP: Youth emigration could be biggest challenge of 2016

Budapest, January 4 (MTI) – Young people leaving Hungary in increasing numbers could be the biggest challenge of 2016, opposition LMP party said.
It is estimated that 150,000-200,000 more young people could be leaving the country this year, which could raise the number of people “finding refuge abroad” to over a million by year-end, Mate Kanasz-Nagy, the party’s youth spokesman, told a press conference on Monday.
The problem is not exclusively about young people and highly qualified workers, but also about health-care professionals, bus drivers, truck drivers and hotel staff, he said. The government is only putting out fires instead of addressing the root causes, he said, adding that its “Come home” scheme to entice workers abroad back to the country has failed. LMP calls on the government to help people who see emigration as their only chance out of a miserable situation. LMP sees immediate wage rises, a personal income tax cut, scrapping higher education fees and clearing up corruption as solutions, he said.
