Leading political analyst shared who Orbán would choose as president

Gábor Török is one of Hungary’s leading political analysts who regularly has inside information from the inner circles of the Orbán government. In his latest interview, he believes that PM Orbán will choose the next president of Hungary, and his choice will be somebody from the oldest Fidesz members.
According to 24.hu, a Hungarian news outlet publishing the interview with Mr Török, Katalin Novák did not fulfil Orbán’s expectations as president. And that is not only because her pardon caused damage to the Fidesz-KDNP alliance which has a supermajority in the parliament. Török believes that President Novák interfered in issues she should not have. For example, she expressed her opinion on issues concerning NATO, which Orbán did not like.
Török said the scandal proved it was not all the same who sat in the position of the president, even in an asymmetrical system like the Orbán regime where the governing parties have an immense majority in politics, economy, or media. A president should not only take good selfies but be professional and never allow such mistakes to happen. Another disadvantage of the issue is that Orbán will not help female politicians rise to the top in the next few years. Török suggested that Katalin Novák’s and Judit Varga’s resignation is proof for the prime minister: top politics is not for women.
The finance minister is the best choice for President – here is why
After the scandal, Orbán’s interest is to minimise the casualties and choose a president who will serve their term without problems. In 2010, he chose wrongly by electing Pál Schmitt, who had to resign after his plagiarism scandal. Afterwards, he chose János Áder, one of the “grand old men” of Fidesz, who has been a party member since the start. And Áder served two terms without problems.
Novák was also an outsider (and a woman) and failed. Török believes that Orbán will again choose somebody from his inner circle. If László Kövér, the Speaker of the Parliament, does not accept it, Orbán will probably choose Mihály Varga, Hungary’s finance minister.
Varga never had a scandal. He always follows the central communication but can rephrase it and tell what the government does with his own words. And that is what Orbán needs now more than ever.
