Jobbik Urges Calling to Account Those Responsible for Red Sludge Disaster

Budapest, September 17 (MTI) – No one has been held responsible yet for the October 2010 red sludge disaster in western Hungary, and those culpable should be held to account without further delay, the radical nationalist Jobbik party said today.
Lawmaker Lajos Kepli told a press conference that despite government promises at the time not to leave those responsible for the industrial accident unpunished, the court has not even passed a first-instance ruling. A parliamentary committee found concrete reasons and responsibilities in the case and its report was used by the prosecutor, yet the case has been stuck in court, he added.
Kepli, who headed the committee, called on the justice minister to help prevent further delays in the case that claimed the lives of ten people, led to more than 200 injured and major financial damage. He called for a verdict that would demonstrate that irresponsibility is intolerable in hazardous facilities.
Despite final decisions passed against the operator company Mal, compensation imposed by the court cannot be collected because the company is under liquidation and its assets have been frozen, he noted.
Jobbik plans to hold a protest at the Veszprem County Court and the homes of the company’s owners on the anniversary of the disaster, he added.
