Jobbik reaffirms need for border guard

Budapest, February 24 (MTI) – The Jobbik party on Wednesday reiterated its stance that Hungary should reinstate the border guard to protect the country’s borders.
Speaking at a press conference, lawmaker Istvan Apáti criticised parliament’s defence committee for not including his party’s proposal in its next agenda.
Apáti said Hungary’s border guard should consist of at least 8,000 members with an elite border defence unit being established within the force. He said the deployment of thousands of police officers on the country’s borders could result in a rise in criminal activity in the areas they were originally dispatched on a patrol duty.
The lawmaker said only a force specifically trained to patrol the border could prevent “migrants with military experience” or in some cases “terrorists” from entering the country.
