Hungarian man may face jail because he joined the Ukrainian army to fight against the Russians

The prosecutor’s office of southern Hungary’s Csongrád-Csanád county has pressed charges against a Hungarian national who joined the Ukrainian army last spring and has done military service in that country.

Jail for joining the Ukrainian army?

The man, a resident of Makó is accused of “prohibited recruitment through joining an organisation in armed conflict outside (Hungary’s) military alliance”, said a spokesperson for the prosecutor.

According to the indictment, the man went to Ukraine and, after a few days of training, started service in a reconnaissance and combat battalion.

The prosecutor’s office has proposed that the man should be sentenced to imprisonment in his absence. The Szeged court will decide the guilt of the man, who is believed to be staying at an unknown location, the prosecutor’s office added.
