Is there gas or no gas in Hungary? Orbán cabinet starting energy savings at state institutions

The government is starting to make energy savings at state institutions, while ensuring the regulated price regime for household utilities remains in force, the government’s information centre KTK said in a statement late on Monday.

The Hungarian government constantly communicates that there is enough gas for the winter period, yet an energy emergency was declared back in July. The cuts for everyone have also been abolished, and now only users below average consumption can get gas at a reduced price.

In recent months, the government has been repeating that the European Union “has imposed reckless sanctions and that peace is needed. At the same time, the Hungarian Foreign Minister, for example, does not say how he imagines peace to be achieved. It is perhaps clear even to the Orbán government, which often defends Moscow’s interests, that if countries demand that Russia stop its bloody aggression against Ukraine, Putin will not stop the war.

The government has ordered all state institutions and state-owned companies to reduce their gas consumption by 25 percent, the statement said. As part of that measure, state institutions cannot be heated over 18 degrees Celsius, with the exception of health care facilities, homes for the elderly and children, as well as creches.

Schools will be required to be heated at least 18 degrees Celsius, but the temperature in classrooms for children until 14 will need to be at least 20 degrees, the statement said.

It is clear that the Hungarian government is trying to reassure the public and the market that there is gas for Hungary, but they are doing something else, which is making people feel insecure.
