Illegal entrants total 391,000 in 2015

Budapest (MTI) – Last year, police apprehended a total 391,384 foreign nationals crossing into Hungary illegally, the national police reported on its website on January 1.
The wave of migrants picked up in the summer months, when thousands of migrants arrived on a daily basis. The influx peaked on September 15, the eve of Hungary’s closing down its border with Serbia, when a total 9,380 illegal entrants were registered.
There has been no massive immmigration since October 17, when Hungary also closed its border with Croatia. Since then, migrants have typically taken routes through Slovenia and Austria to reach western destinations, Germany in the first place.
Under legislation passed in September, illegal entry is considered a criminal offence.
