Hungarians protested in Romania against the terror of local bears

Hundreds of local Hungarian citizens protested in Tusnádfürdő (Baile Tusnad) in Szeklerland, Transylvania, Central Romania. The bear question is one of the biggest problems since the frequent attacks of the brown bears decimate the livestock and harms tourism in the region.

According to index.hu, almost 500 people took part in the demonstration aiming to warn local authorities to act and deal with the bear question. In June, for example, there were more than 80 bear alarms.

The mayor of the Hungarian town said that locals feel terrorized. They would like the authorities to move some bears away to reduce their number. That is because the number of tourists decreased in the last few weeks because of the increasing number of attacks.

The mayor warned that if local authorities do not act, citizens might take the problem into their hands and then “all hell might break loose.”
