Hungarian virologists – the reopening of terraces was too early in Hungary

According to the Hungarian experts interviewed, the reopening of terraces in Hungary was too early, the negative consequences of which are expected within one or two weeks.

As the first step of easing restrictions in Hungary, terraces could reopen last weekend. According to the Hungarian toxicologist, Gábor Zacher, the reopening of terraces was an irresponsible decision due to the several unvaccinated young people.

“Suddenly, the three green lights came on, as in Formula One”, and crowds of young people filled the terraces in Hungary. The expert added that even though he understands that everyone is fed up with confinement,”but we have to accept that our desires and the epidemic situation are still not parallel”. As he says,

the results of the irresponsibility and incredible indiscipline experienced on Saturday and Sunday will be seen in one or two weeks.

The medical also pointed out that the first vaccination is not enough. The immunity develops 14 days after the second vaccination, and even after that, caution is still necessary.

“We are treating patients who have been hospitalised after their second vaccination. In fact, they were not on a ventilator, so the course of the disease was not severe. However, this proved that the infection could also be acquired and transmitted after the first and second vaccinations” – said the toxicologist to the Hungarian news portal SzeretlekMagyarország.

Gábor Zacher is not the only medical who says that the reopening of terraces was an irresponsible decision. According to the Hungarian virologist, Gábor Kemenesi, the opening “should not be lived as a party, but as a responsibility for those who have not yet been vaccinated, who are still in danger and can be hospitalised and, of course, as a responsibility to help restaurants and keep the industry running this week and in the autumn as well”.

As SzeretlekMagyarország reports, the virologist also added that

the majority of young people partying on terraces are aged 18-40, who are currently vaccinated in 10-25%, and the epidemic is still going on.

According to Miklós Rusvai virus researcher, the opening of the terraces on Saturday expects a 1-2% deterioration in the epidemiological data.

As primarily younger age group took advantage of the opportunity,

the average age of those in hospitals may decrease in two or three weeks.

“There will be no tendency to deteriorate, maybe it would have been luckier if it hadn’t been for this sudden opening by the weekend, but I can imagine that from a psychological point of view, this would have been or was considered justified”, said the expert to SzeretlekMagyarország.
