Hungarian FM: No Hungarian citizens registered for consular protection in Kabul

There are no Hungarian citizens registered for consular protection in the Afghan capital; any Hungarians affected by Saturday’s attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul will receive all necessary help from the foreign ministry, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told MTI on Sunday.

The ministry is continuously monitoring developments in Kabul jointly with counter-terrorism force TEK and the Military National Security Service, the minister said. The ministry’s consular department and the Ankara embassy accredited to Kabul and the Islamabad consulate have immediately contacted partners in Afghanistan and Europe, the Afghan consul in Islamabad and the Hungarian military contingent in Kabul, Szijjártó said.

The minister said they are currently receiving contradictory news as to whether there are any Hungarians affected by the attack but the information cannot be regarded as credible due to the situation in Afghanistan.

“We are constantly monitoring developments and if it becomes clear that there were any Hungarian citizens at the hotel and they need assistance, our colleagues will naturally provide all the help necessary,” Szijjártó said.

The Afghan Interior Ministry on Sunday said the gun attack against the Intercontinental Hotel had ended. All the gunmen had been killed by security forces. At least six civilians, including a foreign woman, were killed in the attack.
