If you have never been to Europe before but have daydreamed of backpacking across the continent, you probably look forward to seeing the beautiful sights in Paris, Barcelona, and Milan. Another very popular destination for tourists is the city of Budapest in Hungary.

Here, we will tell you why Hungary is not just a good place to visit but a nice area to settle in as well.

The Country

Hungary is a European nation right smack in the middle of the continent.

They are a country with a rich history spanning the Roman Empire, the Napoleonic Wars, and the Second World War, so you will be sure to see a lot of stunning architecture and experience the taste of various interesting cuisines. Today, Hungary is a democratic parliamentary republic led by a president.

Most people measure their happiness according to their work and life balance. In their Better Life Initiative report in 2018, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found that a good 82% of Hungary’s residents are content with how their time is being spent. The same study by the OECD said that only 14% of the less than 10 million population reported to have low life satisfaction. This could be because only 8% of the people live in poverty in relation to their income.

The World Bank defines a high-income economy as those with a gross national income per capita of $12,536 and above. With this description, the OECD recognizes Hungary as a high-income economy.

The System

One factor that probably adds to the people’s happiness is the free education in place.

Education is provided by the Hungarian government for all levels.

The World Bank reported that they spent 4.7% of their gross domestic product on education in 2016. Hungary also has a universal healthcare system that is completely funded by the state, which is another reason for the people’s contentment and could be why their life expectancy rate has only steadily increased since the 1990s.

The Culture

An interesting feature about Hungary is their prevailing spa culture. They may be a land-locked country but they are certainly not lacking in their thermal water springs. In fact, there are more than 1,300 springs found in Hungary, including 123 in the capital, for everyone to enjoy their spa trips all year-round. Together with their free healthcare system, the rich mineral properties found in their springs may be a contributing factor to the good health of the residents.

Hungary is also a smorgasbord of gastronomic delights.

Be warned, though. This country might be small but they are big on paprika and this might not be very kind to those with delicate stomachs.

Every year, people are finding it easier to find work anywhere in the world because of the growing advantages of technology. This may be why a lot of young professionals have chosen to seize the moment and emigrate to Hungary. With the cheaper costs of living compared to most of Europe and America, an adventure awaits anyone who gives Hungary a try.
