Government proposes VAT cuts on game, fish and higher armed services salaries

Budapest (MTI) – Agriculture Minister Sándor Fazekas has proposed that the value-added tax on game and fish should be reduced from 27 percent to 5 percent. The government is raising the salaries of members of Hungary’s armed forces. 

Speaking at the opening of hunting and angling expo FeHoVa in Budapest, the minister said that the measure would promote healthy food products among a broader range of consumers, while it would help create jobs and whiten the economy.

The cuts are expected to be a part of next year’s budget.

FeHoVa, the largest such event in the region, attracted some 60,000 visitors last year.

Govt raises armed services salaries

Parliamentary state secretary for defence Tamás Vargha told a news conference on Friday that whereas a sergeant, for example, earned 150,000 forints (EUR 485) in 2015, from January this year he will receive 221,000. He added that under the previous government pay in the military had never risen to such an extent.

He also referred to a previous decision by the current government to increase the defence budget by 0.1 percent of gross domestic product each year.
