Government: Hungary does not want to seal borders but to protect them

Budapest, September 25 (MTI) – Hungary does not want to seal its borders but to protect them, the government spokesman said on Friday.

Zoltan Kovacs told public radio Kossuth that it is not worth it for European Union politicians to debate with each other about basic EU rules that clearly state that the borders must be protected.

The construction of a fence on the Hungarian-Croatian border is nearing completion and razor wire has been laid at Tornyiszentmiklos on the border with Slovenia, Kovacs said.

The Hungarian government does not consider the fence a solution to handling mass migration but it is a means to stop illegal migrants. The Schengen agreement allows EU states to use all necessary means to protect the borders, he added.

The extraordinary meeting of EU heads of state and government has resulted in major developments but no progress has been made on the most important issue, which is the strengthening of Greece’s border protection, he said. It is important, however, that European Council President Donald Tusk confirmed that everyone must respect EU rules, Kovacs added.

Kovacs added that even though Croatia is not a Schengen member, it is an EU member state and despite this, it has openly declared that it would not abide by the relevant EU rules.
