Government closes Sunday shop hours loopholes

Budapest, February 19 (MTI) – Hungary’s government has decided it will not add any more exceptions to restrictions on Sunday business hours at retailers, the government spokesman said after a cabinet meeting late on Wednesday.

The government does not see any reason at present to expand the exceptions already contained in the law by decree, said Zoltan Kovacs. For this reason, the government is drafting a decree that will prohibit exceptions to the law based on tourist demand, shopping habits, employee numbers and the peculiarities of some residential areas, he added.

Under legislation approved late last year, most big retailers will be required to close on Sundays from the middle of March. Shops that are under 200 square metres and are family-run are exempted from the rule.
